The following brief biographical sketches describe the principal personnel involved with the Building Systems Program.
Michael J. Brandemuehl Michael J. Brandemuehl, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. As a faculty member since 1988, he has performed research and taught in the general area of building energy systems analysis. Research activities specifically include intelligent and integrated control of building systems using adaptive and optimal control methodologies to improve real-time operation, modeling and simulation of building energy systems using physical and neural network models, development and evaluation of humidity control strategies in buildings, use of structural building mass for thermal storage, and characterization of ventilation for indoor air quality.

Gregor P. Henze Gregor P. Henze, Ph.D., P.E., joined the CEAE Department as a professor in 2008 and has performed research and taught in the general area of building energy systems analysis since 1992. He holds a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Colorado and a Diplom-Ingenieur in energy and process engineering from the Technical University of Berlin (1992) and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University (1991). From 1996 to 1999, Prof. Henze worked in the building controls industry in Germany. From 1999 to 2008, he was an assistant and later associate professor and founding member of the architectural engineering program in the Peter Kiewit Institute at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Prof. Henze is a professional mechanical engineer, a certified high-performance building design professional (HBDP), an active member of ASHRAE and ASME, and Associate Editor for ASMEás Journal of Solar Energy Engineering."

Paul Komor Paul Komor is a Lecturer in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado Boulder. His current research is on the roles of renewable energy and energy efficiency in electricity systems. Prior to joining the University of Colorado faculty, he was a Project Director at the U.S. Congressá Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), where he wrote and evaluated energy legislation. He holds a B.S. from Cornell University, and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He has published numerous refereed articles, reports, and other papers; and in 2004 published a book, Renewable Energy Policy, that compares U.S. and EU experiences with renewable energy policies.
In 2005, Paul was selected as the 2006 MAP/Ming Visiting Professor of Energy and the Environment at Stanford. In 2007, Paul shared in the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Also in 2007, Paul was appointed CU-Boulder's Energy Education Director, with responsibilities to enhance CU-Boulder's energy education efforts.

Moncef Krarti Moncef Krarti, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering and has been affiliated with BSP since August 1991. Prior to that time, he spent four years as an associate with Steven Winter and Associates and as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Texas. His research activities include extensive exploration in the areas of ground-coupled heat transfer from buildings, modeling and control of thermal energy storage systems, indoor air quality, and energy analysis of commercial buildings. He has written over 120 technical papers as well as over 30 manuscripts including a textbook on Energy Audit of Building Systems. He is a technical editor of ASME Journal of Solar Energy Engineering. He is also member of several ASHRAE technical committees.

Brent Protzman Brent Protzman, Ph.D., EIT, Intern LC, is an assistant professor in the Building Systems Program of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Ph.D. in Engineering and an emphasis in Architectural Engineering and Building Illumination. As a newer faculty member, Brent is teaching lighting courses at the university as well as setting up a lighting research program. His research interests are in light spectrum (optimizing the color spectrum of lamps), colorimetry (color measurement and prediction), daylighting (daylighting system optimization), and the psychology of light (human response to changes in lighting systems).

Sanda Vásconez Sandra Vásconez, MS, LC, is a Senior Instructor in the department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She obtained her Masterás of Science in Lighting degree from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After receiving her degree she worked at the LRC as adjunct faculty teaching graduate-level lighting courses, and as program manager. She was the principal investigator for several design and research projects. She is interested in lighting design and applications, human factors in lighting, and outreach education. Besides her work and interests in lighting, Professor Vásconez has worked in museum exhibition design.
