Prospective student information

Dear Prospective Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program. The geotechnical area offers degree programs in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering.

A complete package of application materials can be requested by following the "Mailed Request Information" link on your right. All necessary forms will be mailed to you.

After receiving the application package, you should return all application forms to our Graduate Coordinator, Jan DeMay (303-492-7316) at the above address.

You may also obtain the application forms on-line. Please visit the graduate admission application instructions by following the "Graduate School" link on your right.

Four letters of recommendation and two original transcripts from each college you have attended must be submitted. These transcripts must be sent to us directly from the college that issues them and must not be marked "issued to student". The Civil Engineering Department does not require GRE scores but strongly recommends that a GRE score be submitted.

Please note all application materials must be received before your application will be processed. Your application will be reviewed by your specified area of study and then brought to the entire Graduate Committee for a decision.

To be considered for financial assistance such as Teaching Assistantships, your application for fall admission must be complete by February 1. The final deadline to apply is March 1. The application deadline for spring admission is October 30.

For more detail information, please contact our graduate coordinator at the above address. You are also welcome to contact the geotechnical faculty. Contact information can be found in the "Faculty" pages of this Geotechnical web site.

Degrees

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado offers a comprehensive graduate program in geotechnical engineering leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Currently, there are about 225 graduate students in the department.

Students studying toward the M.S. degree are required to take either

  • 30 semester hours including a thesis (6 hours), or
  • 30 semester hours of coursework

The Ph.D. degree requires additional course work beyond the M.S. degree and a dissertation.

Student Support

Support is available for qualified students in the form of teaching assistantships (TAs) or research assistantship (RAs). TAs receive a stipend of approximately $1,250 per month, a tuition waiver, and on-half of their health insurance for the academic year. Fully-funded RAs receive a stipend of approximately $1,250 per month, a tuition waiver, and on-half of their health insurance. Department and university fellowships are also available. Roughly half of the graduate students in the program are funded. Decisions on financial support are usually made during February preceding the fall semester, so early application is encouraged.
