Mixing and (Bio)chemical reactions in heterogeneous porous media: Parsing out the “scale effect” on reaction rates Despite much effort to understand and characterize various processes affecting diffusion and dispersion of solutes in porous media, the coincident reactions to which said solutes are subject need revision, specifically with respect to mixing processes in the subsurface. Physical processes of deformation and shear in flow systems enhance mixing of reactive constituents. Quantifying this mixing and the impact on reaction dynamics is important for accurately predicting contaminant fate and transport in the subsurface.
