Causes of ARD
•Atmospheric oxidation of iron-sulfur
minerals (FeS2).
•Minerals usually
isolated from the atmosphere, come in
contact with atmosphere.
•Runoff from tailings piles and drainage
from adits are highly acidic and highly concentrated
with metals.
